How to Make Your Wireless Internet Connection Faster (Comcast

Aug 28, 2009 11:02 PM
Home network speed options displayed in four blue house icons.

Wireless internet is a feature most people have on their routers. Speed is a big issue and most people want to maximize their speeds.

Make sure you have all the cables plugged in properly and securely.

Try to get a wireless G or N router with WPA/WPA2 support. Also make sure that the laptop or other device supports this.

Request faster service or more mbps, Comcast offer 6 on average. However, they offer 8 in most areas and 16 in some areas. Also try to have a recent cable modem (DOCSIS 2.0 certified)

If you have a big home try to put the router in a central location.

Make sure you have a secure wireless connection. This way no one else can access and use bandwidth.

Try to stop background noise. For example: a 2.4ghz router and 2.4ghz phone may run into problems.

Change any of these setting by going into your router (in the address bar of your browser type: "192.168.1.1") the default should be set for user name admin and the password left blank. Click Here for further router support.

Tips

  • Use WPA/WPA2 encryption on your wireless network. (more secure then WEP)
  • Try to stay away from VOIP (Voice over IP) if you are not computer savvy, which might prevent some problems.
  • Try a gigabyte router so your wired connections get some speed.
  • Use anti-virus/spyware programs to eliminate bandwidth hogging programs that use your internet. Free anti-virus programs: AVG/BitDefender/Avast! Free anti-spyware: Ad-Aware/Spybot - Search & Destroy/SUPERAntiSpyware.
  • Also try installing a personal firewall to help block unwanted hackers and control what programs access the internet. Free firwalls: Comodo/Jetico.
  • Do not use a cable splitter, this could degrade connection flow.
  • Connect your cable modem to your computer using Ethernet instead of USB.

Warnings

  • Make sure you use your own network.
