Type the '@' sign, followed by the persons name or group. (Start typing the first few letters of the person or group's name, and you will be able to select them from a drop down box. )Notice that it has now turned into a link in your status update box. Hit the 'Share' button. Now your update will be in your friends stream, for all of them to see.
